The year 2000, in retrospect, was a watershed year for us.  As is typically the case in life with God, it unfolded independently from any plan or intention on our part.

Hanna had come to the point where she was ready to investigate and visit the places of her parents’ births. We hardly knew where these were. She had been born in the city of Bonn in 1932, although her family lived in Gemünd in the Eifel region of Germany to the west.  But neither of her Jewish parents was born there.

After the night of November 9-10, 1938, known in history as Crystal Night, when synagogues all over Germany were burned and rocks thrown through the windows of Jewish businesses and homes, Hanna’s father moved the family to the city of Cologne, searching for safety.  It was to no avail. In desperation, he ultimately secured a place for her on a children’s transport out of Germany to England. She left Cologne during the night of July 24, 1939.  She was seven years old.  She never saw her parents again.  Unable to leave Germany, they perished in the Holocaust…….
